What a wild Wednesday night

By Staff | Jun 11, 2010

SPENCER – It took just two swings of the bat to crush Spirit Lake’s spirits on Wednesday night, as the Spencer Tigers connected on not one, but two walk off hits to earn victories in both varsity softball and baseball action in Spencer.

The Indians and Tigers needed extra innings in the softball game to determine a winner after Spencer scored four unanswered runs to overcome a 3-0 deficit, the last of which came in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The baseball team also jumped out to an early lead after a six-run second inning, however, Spencer’s Alex Wethor was not about to let this one slip away.

The senior launched a three-run homer to pull within one at 10-9 in the sixth inning before connecting on a single to left field with the game tied and bases loaded in the seventh for a 12-11 victory.

Wethor finished with five RBIs and scored three runs on 4-of-5 hitting.

All nine Indians scored at least one run and were led by Nik Erickson, who went 3-5 with a run scored and two RBI.

The baseball team will return to action Friday as it travels to face LeMars and the softball team will host a home tournament on Saturday.
