SIOUX?CITY – The Estherville Lincoln Central has had a rough two days taking on two of the top teams in the state.

After losing to Class 2A No. 2 Emmetsburg on Wednesday, the Midgettes (rated No. 11 in Class 2A in Thursday’s poll) had to come back with a doubleheader against Class 3A No. 2 Bishop Heelan on Thursday.

The Crusaders prevailed in both games with a 3-0 victory in game one and the hosts rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the seventh inning and won 4-3 in eight innings in game two.

“Our defense really let us down,” said ELC coach Megan Anderson. “We’re giving up too many unearned runs.”

In game one, ELC out-hit Bishop Heelan 3-2. Brooke Egeland pitched for ELC striking out 10 and walking one.

Morgan Schichtl, Ashley Weston and Kellie Christensen each had a hit. ELC had runners on second three times in the game, but could get them no further.

In game two, ELC scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Emily Kirchner, Bosch and Schichtl hit consecutive singles with Schichtl’s hit scoring Kirchner. Another run scored when Allie Sievert reached on a fielder’s choice and courtesy runner Jessica Phillips scored on a passed ball.

Bishop?Heelan earned both its runs in the seventh inning, but an ELC error allowed the winning run in the eighth inning.

ELC (9-5) travels to Armstrong today.
