Daily News award winners announced

By Staff | Jun 22, 2010

While it’s already the third day of summer, the Daily News has one final item of business from the spring sports season-the Daily News Spring Sports Awards.

For the 2010 season, the newspaper will give out seven awards in the six sports to an Estherville Lincoln Central athlete.

Let start with ELC’s state champion.

It’s been several years since the boys track team has produced a state champion.

Senior Kyle Farmer has been the leader of the team throughout the season with his efforts in the shot put. At the Class 2A State Meet at Drake Stadium, he put forth his best effort and two of his throws were far enough to win the state title. His toss of 55 feet, inch will go down as one of the top throws in school history.

Continuing with the track theme, this year’s award for girls track is earned by a standout freshman. Emily Kirchner set the school record in the 400-meter dash and qualified for state in three events-the 400-meter dash, the sprint medley relay and the 4×400-meter relay. She placed eighth in the 400-meter dash for ELC’s lone medal at the state meet.

Continuing with state qualifiers, the girls tennis team earns two Daily News awards. The doubles team of senior Kaylene Vos and Erin Olson earned an eighth-place finish at the state meet. The duo is the first pair from ELC to make it to championship day since Anna Kabe and Stephanie Bohmer placed eighth at state in 2001.

This year’s award for boys tennis goes to the teams No. 1 singles player Nate Jensen.

In golf, Taylor Heinrichs was the top player for the ELC girls this season.

Matt Anderson was the top player in boys golf.

One extra award to give out goes back to the winter sport season. It’s never been officially announced that Gable Bonner is this year’s Daily News Athlete of the Year in wrestling. Bonner, a sophomore, was ELC’s lone district qualifier.

Athletes may pick up their awards at the Daily News office at 10 N. Seventh St.
