Daily News summer awards announced

David Swartz, managing editor of the Estherville Daily News, announced the newspaper’s 2010 summer athlete of the year awards on Thursday.

Kendall Bosch earned the Daily News award for softball while Marcus Christensen earned the award for baseball.

Bosch, a sophomore and first team Lakes All-Conference selection, did the bulk of the Midgettes’ pitching. In 19 appearances she pitched 131 innings and gave up 26 earned runs for a 1.39 earned run average. She finished with a 12-7 record and had 152 strikeouts while giving up 107 hits and 12 walks.

Bosch also was one of the team’s top hitters as she batted .318 with an on base percentage of .383 with 27 hits, 16 RBIs, 10 doubles and one home run.

Christensen, a junior and second team all-conference selection, was a leader at the plate for ELC where he batted .316 with a .453 on base percentage. He had 24 hits, second on the team, and tied for first in runs (26) and tied for second in RBIs (14). He led the team in stolen bases and also was second in walks drawn with 17.
