Spirit Lake Park finishes second at U of M meet

SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake Park Boys Track Team continues to challenge itself early in the season at the 2011 University of Minnesota Indoor Championships this past Saturday.

The Indians scored 27 points, good enough to place second out of 30 teams. White Bear Lake, Minn., took first with 32 points. Buffalo, Minnesota was third with 24 points and Hudson, Wis. Was fourth with 23.5 points.

SLP came away with two top finishes, Keith Byers set a SLP school record in the 1600-meter run with his time of 4 minutes, 25.81 seconds. Teammate Alec Baldwin held the previous record of 4:27 in the event. Byers’ time is currently the second fastest in Iowa’s Class 3A.

Baldwin gave the Indians their second top finish, winning the 3200-meter race in 9:45.60. His time is currently third-best in Iowa in Class 3A.

Baldwin also added a second-place finish in the 800-meter run. However his time of 1:58.29 is the fastest in Iowa’s Class 3A.

Also placing second was the 4×400-meter relay team of Kevin Martinson, Aric Waltz, Luke Kabele and Kane Felding. The four juniors were just shy of SLP’s Indoor School Record by just nine-hundredths of a second.

Placing fourth was the medley relay team of Kabele, Waltz, Martinson and Felding in 3:47.85.

Placing 10th was Will Norris in the 320-meter run in 10:20.25.

Coach Brad Travis highlighted his 4×800-meter team which includes four freshmen, Kyle Anderson, Paul Woizeschek, Pat Woizeschke and Tanner Goetsch. They placed 12th in 9:18.48. Travis said the team also neared the SLP freshman 4×800 record, missing the mark by 4 seconds.
