SLO sweeps ELC in season opener

SPIRIT LAKE – The Estherville Lincoln Central Boys Tennis Team struggled through its first outing, taking on a tough Spirit Lake/Okoboji squad.

The hosts swept ELC 9-0 in varsity play.

“Even though we struggled, we competed well,” said ELC first-year coach Tony Klein. “We’ll have a fun challenge to see how much we can improve throughout the year.”

At the No. 1 singles, Brad Olsen had some success, but lost 10-4 to Brandon Stoll.

At the No. 2 singles, Riley Edwards lost 10-1 to Wes Bergquist. Joe Heinrichs fell 10-0 to Brett Kraus and Levi Jensen lost by the same score to Jordan Richey. At the No. 5 singles, Tucker Olson lost 10-2 to Joe Oldson and Taylor Fernholz lost 10-0 to Trystan Wiedow.

In doubles play, Olsen and Edwards lost 10-1 to Stoll and Bergquist; Heinrichs and Jensen lost 10-1 to Kraus and Oldson and Olson and Fernholz lost 10-4 to Richey and Rowley.

ELC hosts Spencer on Monday. SLO is at Storm Lake today.

Spirit Lake/Okoboji also swept the junior varsity matches, 9-0.

In singles play, John Reisner lost 8-2, Tim Soper lost 8-1, Thomas Bortvit lost 8-0, Hunter Brown lost 8-0, Colten Christensen lost 8-0 and Brandon Sharar lost 8-1.

In doubles, Reisner and Soper lost 8-5, Bortvit and Brown lost 8-1 and Christensen and Payton Jaquith lost 8-0.

In exhibition matches, Jaquith lost in singles 6-0. In doubles, Bortvit and Brown lost 8-0, Jaquith and Sharar lost 8-0 and Reisner and Soper lost 6-2.
