SPIRIT LAKE – In a match pitting one of Iowa’s top prep golfers against one from Minnesota, Spirit Lake’s Maureen Owens came out on top in the Indians’ season opener.

Owens carded a 35 to earn medalist honors while Jackson County Central’s Kaylee Benson shot a 37.

“I don’t know how someone can play that well when we haven’t putted the greens yet this season,” said Spirit Lake coach Bob Kirchner, who was amazed by both scores.

The coach said Spirit Lake had just gotten on the course Tuesday of this week.

Spirit Lake also won the team race, carding a 196 to JCC’s 215.

Leah Hilpipre had the next score for the Indians with a 52 while Whitney Berkland shot a 53 and Emily Ayres a 56. Non-counting scores were another 56 from Amanda Williams and a 60 by Lindsay Hamilton.

Spirit Lake begins Lakes Conference play Monday at Storm Lake with Emmetsburg joining the two schools.
