Midgets run well at Spirit Lake Co-ed

SPIRIT LAKE – A warm weather day helped Estherville Lincoln Central athletes bring their times day at the Spirit Lake Co-ed Invitational on Tuesday.

The Midgets finished fourth overall with 64.56 points. Host Spirit Lake Park won easily with 162 points followed by Emmetsburg with 94, Okoboji with 68, ELC, Clay Central-Everly with 60, South O’Brien with 55 and North Sentral Kossuth/Armstrong-Ringsted with 54.5.

“It was nice to get our second outdoor meet in,” said ELC coach Dick Barrett. “We’re behind some teams who have already had four outdoor meets.

Gable Bonner had the lone top finish for the Midgets with his throw of 44 feet, 2 1/2 inches in the shot put. Teammate Riley Curry placed sixth with a throw of 39 feet, 10 1/2 inches.

Miguel Sanchez had a busy night as he took second in the 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 48.58 seconds and third in the 3200-meter run in 10:49.34 and third in the 800-meter run in 2:04.84.

“I was very pleased with Gable Bonner’s first place-that was a personal record for him,” said Barrett. “Miguel ran 3 1/2 miles of competitive running and had an outstanding time of 2:04 in the 800.”

ELC’s 4×800-meter relay team of Alex Bloomquist, Tyler Swanson, Lee Bates and Joe Clayton took second in 8:57.89. Also second was the medley relay of Ty Wilson, Marcus Christensen, Ryan Vos and Bloomquist in 3:54.68.

Wilson took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Placing fifth were the 4×200-meter relay team of Bryce Hansen, Billy Snyder, Evan Hansen and Andreas Blanco in 1:41.49; the 4×100-meter relay team of Blanco, Wilson, Vos and Christensen in 47.34 seconds and the 4×400-meter relay team of Bloomquist, Swanson, Evan Hansen and Tyler Shryock in 3:48.96.

Also fifth was the freshmen shuttle hurdle team of Blake Gjerde, Oscar Ramirez, Anthony Segura and Alec Wycoff in 72.63 seconds.

In the discus, Zach Wycoff placed fifth with a throw of 119 feet, 7 inches while Brennen Nyren was sixth with a throw of 119 feet, 3 inches.

Vos finished sixth in the 400-meter dash in 55.64 seconds.

“Alex Bloomquist had a nice meet, running two good 800s and a 400 in three relays,” said Barrett.

ELC is scheduled to host the 90th running of the Estherville Relays on Friday. Weather may delay the meet.
