Miguel Sanchez (with baton), Lee Bates and the rest of the Estherville Lincoln Central Boys Track Team will have to wait a couple days to compete in the 90th Running of the Estherville Relays. In the computer age, a sports writer has many sources to find statistics and information to help him write an informed story-when he has time to do the research.

Two longstanding sites that have served Iowa are those hosted by the Iowa High School Athletic Association (www.iahsaa.org) and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (www.ighsau.org).

They post regional and district pairings in all sports. They have a history of year’s past (but only a little over 10 years back). However, the IAHSAA site also has all-time state records that go back throughout the history of sports in Iowa.

For about the past five years, quikstatsiowa.com has provided a place for coaches to input statistics for football, volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball.

This spring, track and field stats have been added to the mix.

QuikStats lets visitors view the top times in each event throughout the state.

Stats can be viewed by school, conference or district.

Both the boys and girls athletic organizations have assigned district track.

The Class 2A District at Cherokee on Thursday, May 12 features the following teams.

Cherokee, Washington

Estherville Lincoln Central

Okoboji, Milford

Ridge View, Holstein

Sioux Center

Sioux Central, Sioux Rapids

Unity Christian, Orange City

Western Christian, Hull

Quikstats immediately shows viewers where ELC athletes stand in relation to others within the district. Thus they can see who’ll they have to beat next month.

For example, Allie Sievert’s best jump this season of 5 feet is second in the district.

In track, the district winner in each event qualifies for state. Then the next best 16 times or distances from all the district meets qualify.

The ELC girls currently have three relay times that are third in the district, the 4×100, the 4×400 and the 4×800.

Currently, ELC’s Miguel Sanchez has three top three performances in the district.

He had the fastest time in the 1600-meter run in 4:47.65; is second in the 3200-meter run in 10:49.34 and third in the 800-meter run in 2:04.84.

Admittedly the website relies on coaches updating stats every week, but it staill gives them and the athletes an idea of where they stand.
