Lakers run past weekend competition
Iowa Lakes completed the “strikeout for cancer” weekend sweep by taking two games from Marshalltown 8-7 and 12-7 on Sunday.
In game one trailing 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Lakers took advantage of walks and a three-run home run by Julia Rubek along with a single by Wendy Coffin to defeat the Tigers 8-7.
Taylor Mackey was the winning pitcher while Rubek, Kelsey Ennenga and Coffin were all 2-3 at the plate.
Game two also found the Lakers scoring late to get the victory. With the score 6-6 entering the bottom of the sixth, the hometown team scored six runs to blow the game open and get a Sunday afternoon sweep 12-7.
Michelle Thille went 5-5 at the plate with Mackey again the winning pitcher, which means she has pitched 20 of the last 21 games for the Lakers.
Iowa Lakes Softball opened its “Strikeout for Cancer” weekend in pink uniforms by sweeping Southwestern CC Saturday in chilly windy conditions on campus in Estherville by scores of 22-0 and 12-1.
In game one. Taylor Mackey continued doing all the pitching work for the Lakers throwing a no-hitter while the offense pounded out 22 hits including five home runs.

Iowa Lakes had 12 more hits and a doubleheader sweep to honor those fighting cancer. Thille was 3-3 while Priscilla Quintana went 2-2 with a home run and 3 runs scored.
“It was the best doubleheader the team has put together this season,” said Laker coach Shane Bouman. “It is great to honor to see the girls play so hard this weekend for all those fighting a bigger battle. Thanks to all those who came out to support the teams strikeout for cancer weekend.”
Due to weather, the Iowa Lakes softball doubleheader with Ellsworth CC scheduled for today has been moved to Wednesday, April 20 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Estherville.
