Lakers split with No. 12 Tritons

FORT DODGE – Iowa Lakes Softball split with Iowa Central for the second time this season in Region XI play on Wednesday.

The Tritons, rated 12th in Division II, took advantage of Laker miscues to win game one 7-3.

According to assistant coach Jessica VanLoy, one bad pitch by Taylor Mackey cost the Lakers three runs in the third. Poor defense by the Lakers led to three more Triton runs in the fifth.

Julia Rubek was the bright spot offensively going 2-3.

In game two, the Lakers’ stepped up their defense and had a great pitching performance by 2010 All-American Julia Nealer, as they mercy-ruled Iowa Central 9-1.

Nealer gave up just two hits while striking out four in the five-inning victory.

Offensively, the Lakers pounded out eight hits led by Carla Carrillo, who went 2-3, and Priscilla Quintana added a solo home run.

Iowa Lakes (24-10 overall, 15-5 in Region XI) wrap up conference play with a doubleheader against North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City on Friday.
