Lakers wrap up Region XI play with sweep
MASON CITY – The Iowa Lakes Softball Team used great pitching by Julia Nealer and Taylor Mackey to sweep its last conference match up against North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City on Friday.
In game one, Iowa Lakes scored three runs each in the first three innings of the game then added one in the fifth while holding the Trojans to only one run to put the eight-run mercy rule in effect with a final score of 10-1.
Offensively the Lakers pounded out 16 hits with all nine girls having at least one. Priscilla Quintana went 2-3 and Carla Carrillo went 3-4 with two doubles. The pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits.
In game two, Quintana and Carrillo both went 2-3 from the plate helping the Lakers get to their magic six-run total. Iowa Lakes is 26-0 when scoring more than 6 runs.
Mackey and Nealer split duties again with 11 strikeouts and three hits to give the Lakers the 6-3 triumph.
The Lakers wrap up the regular season on Monday against Century College in White Bear Lake, Minn.
