ELC gets preview of Lakes meet

By Staff | May 6, 2011

SPENCER – At a meet that featured all the Lakes Conference teams except for Spirit Lake Park, the Spencer Relays gave ELC head coach Dick Barrett some help in preparing his line-up for the upcoming conference and district meets.

“I’m really pleased with the effort of the team tonight,” said Barrett. “We scored well in a meet where was basically didn’t complete the 4×100 and we had no team in the 4×400.”

The main concern for the coach is the injury bug that has taken out a couple of his athletes. One that occurred Thursday was Ryan Vos pulling a hamstring.

The highlights for ELC included a first-place finish by Alex Bloomquist in the 400-meter dash and Miguel Sanchez winning the 1600-meter run.

“Alex winning the 400 was a pleasant surprise,” said coach Barrett.

Bloomquist’s time was 52.38 seconds.

Meanwhile Sanchez won the 1600 with his career-best time of 4 minutes, 38.44 seconds.

Coach Barrett also thought his 4×200-meter relay team ran well and said Ty Wilson and Marcus Christensen executed a good handoff in the medley relay.

ELC finished second in both those events.

Andreas Blanco, Ty Wilson, Vos and Christensen ran the 4×200 in 1:37.57.

The medley relay team of Wilson, Christensen, Bloomquist and Sanchez finished in 3:51.59.

Gable Bonner threw a career-best in the shot put. His throw of 46 feet, 4 1/4 inches placed him third. Riley Curry placed fourth in the event with a throw of 42 feet, 9 1/4 inches. Bonner also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 120 feet, 1 inch.

Wilson finished third in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 5 inches.

Spenser Diekman tied for fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches.

ELC placed fourth in the 4×800-meter run in 9:19.49. That foursome is Tyler Swanson, Lee Bates, Tyler Shryock and Joe Clayton..

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Diekman, Oscar Ramirez, Anthony Segura and Blake Gjerde took fourth in 1:13.53.

Diekman placed sixth in the 400-meter low hurdles in 1:02.64.

ELC travels to Emmetsburg for the Lakes Conference meet on Monday.
