SLO wins Spencer Tournament
SPENCER – The Spirit Lake-Okoboji Girls Tennis Team couldn’t have played much better at the Spencer Tournament.
SLO won five of the six singles brackets and two out of three in doubles to wn the tournament with 67 points.
Denison-Schleswig finished second with 57 points followed by Fort Dodge with 44, Spencer with 41, Bishop Heelan with 37, Sioux City North with 36, Estherville Lincoln Central with 27 and Sioux City West with 14.
SLO was without the services of Aubry Kolegraff in singles play, but coach Bob O’Hara said every player rose to the challenge.
“Both Alli Gerking and Hannah Coenen had tight matches, but were able to pull out their best tennis when they had to,” he said. “Holly Seemann, Rachael Westergard andKJ Veldman were dominate all day.
“Jamie Kohlhaase who finished second at No. 6 singles played well and has really improved her singles game. We also brought up two junior varsity players, Margaret Delaney and Amanda Bueltel, who subbed at 5 and 6 for a shorthanded Heelan team. Both girls placed third in singles.”
Gerking won the No. 1 singles with a 6-4 win over Denison-Schleswig’s Kristen Alesch in the championship match.
Veldman also faced a D-S player in the finals and won 8-3 over Lesley Bielenberg.
At the No. 3 singles, Hannah Coenen won 6-5 of D-S’s Whitney Gustafson.
At the No. 4 singles, Rachel Westergard won 6-2 over D-S’ Rachel Ingraham.
At the No. 5 singles, Holly Seamann won 6-2 over D-S’s Carli Sis.
At the No. 6 singles, Denison-Schleswig’s Liz Perez defeated Kohlhaase 6-2.
In doubles, Aubry Kolegraff returned to the lineup to join Gerking where they defeated Fort Dodge’s duo 6-2. In the title match.
At the No. 2 doubles, Coenen and Kohlhaase ended up fifth.
At the No. 3 doubles, Veldman and Westergard won the title 6-3 over Bishop Heelan’s pair.
