Lakers’ season comes to a close

WATERLOO – The Iowa Lakes Baseball Team opened Region XI Tournament play with a 4-1 loss to Ellsworth on Thursday. The Panthers out-hit the Lakers 11-8 in the contest in a game between the seventh and sixth seeds, respectively.

Iowa Lakes’ lone run came in the bottom of the ninth inning when Terry Benne doubled to left field. Pinch runner Homar Gonzales advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error. At the plate, Luis Rodriguez, Hector Gonzales and Michael Vine each went 2-4. Jaryd Marks and Benne each had a hit.

Gunner Johnson pitched seven innings in the loss. He gave up all four runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out four batters and walking one. Brett Muron pitched for 2/thirds of an inning while Bryan Lopez closed out the eight. Keith Fandel pitched one inning.

Iowa Lakes ends the season with a 25-20 record.
