Lakers complete round one at NJCAA National Tournament

By Staff | May 17, 2011

The first round of the NJCAA Women’s National Golf Tournament was played the the LPGA International Legends course in Daytona Beach Florida on Monday. Iowa Lakes sophomores Macy Milburn and Meaghan Schmidt were both in action.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t one of the best days for Milburn or Schmidt.

“It’s a tough course, specially knowing that pro’s like Michelle Wie and Lorena Ochoa have won tournaments here,” said coach Andy Soper, ” Weather has been the best we have had all spring with 80 degrees and wind up to 20 miles per hour. We struggled a bit today and I think nerves were the biggest part of it.”

On the day Schmidt shot a 100 while Milburn fired a 102. Round two will start at 7:40 a.m. eastern time. First tee time for the Lakers will be 8:40 for Milburn, and Schmidt will start at 8:50.

“It’s a four day tournament and the toughest part of the tournament is getting through day one. I expect scores will be better tomorrow,” said Soper. “The women settled into their rounds as the day kept going on. Playing later in the day on Bermuda grass greens is tough especially if you’ve never played on them because of the grain.”
