SLO?girls advance to regional final against D-S
CHEROKEE – While LeMars challenged Spirit Lake-Okoboji in the first round of the Class 1A Team Regionals on Saturday, SLO still came up with the 5-0 sweep.
SLO went on to sweep Cherokee 5-0 in the second round to advance to the regional final against Denison.
“LeMars really came out playing well,” said SLO coach Bob O’Hara. “Erica Westoff came out on fire against Aubry Kolegraff and Carolyn Ahlers had a 5-2 second-set lead lead on Alli Gerking. But I was really happy with the way both girls responded.”
Gerking went on to beat Ahlers 6-3, 7-5 while Kolegraff defeated Westhoff 4-6, 6-3 (10-7).
“One thing they never do is lose their composure,” said O’Hara of the two seniors. “They may not have played their best but they keep their cool and force their opponents to make great shots to beat them. That’s what four years of varsity does for you. They both know that you can’t always play your best, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t win.”
In other matches, K.J. Veldman defeated Stephanie Young 6-1, 6-1; Hannah Coenen defeated Catie Meis 6-1, 6-3 and Rachael Westergard defeated Hannah Lang 6-4, 6-1.
With only five match wins needed to advance, next on the docket was Cherokee.
SLO again came up with the sweep.
Gerking defeated Denise Freed 6-0, 6-0; Kolegraff defeated Amber Laupert 6-0, 6-0; Veldman defeated Anna Lehrach 6-1, 6-1; Coenen defeated Taylor Meyerhofer 6-0, 6-3 and Westergard defeated Emily Estala 6-0, 6-2.
