Alec Baldwin and Keith Byers make the first handoff in the 4x800.

DES MOINES – Setting a Class 3A State Record was all in a day’s work for the Spirit Lake Park 4×800-meter relay team.

Alec Baldwin, Keith Byers, Kayne Feldick and Will Norris shattered the previous 3A mark of 7:55.1 set in 1980 by Davis County.

The Indians ran the race Thursday in 7:49.07.

Baldwin is the lone senior in the group and has three more races to run at state.

Byers and Feldick, both juniors, ran the second and third legs of the 4×800, respectively, while sophomore Will Norris anchored the event.

Kayne Feldick makes the final exchange to Will Norris as Spirit Lake Park set a new record in the Class 3A 4x800-meter relay at the state meet on Thursday.

SLP finished seven seconds ahead of second-place Glenwood.

“They did a nice job,” said SLP coach Brad Travis, who noted the foursome ran three seconds better than at the Drake Relays earlier this year. Their time also set a school record in the event.

The all-time 4×800-meter time is 7:44.06 set by Ames in 1987.

Other SLP athletes competing included Alton Kelley, who finished 15th in the discus with a throw of 143 feet, 10 inches.

Travis said Kelley had two good throws and was 4 feet away from making the finals.

Luke Kabele finished 17th in the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 23.38 seconds.

“That’s consistent with what he’s done all year,” said Travis.

SLP athletes compete in three events today, the 400-meter hurdles, the distance medley and the 4×400-meter relay.
