Indians return to playoffs—look to defend title
SPIRIT LAKE – On Wednesday, Spirit Lake will make its sixth playoff appearance overall with its third consecutive playoff qualifying season.
After finishing second in Class 2A in 2011 an winning the 2A title in 2012, the Indians have tasted success the last few seasons.
Spirit Lake won its third straight district title in Class 2A District 2. The Indians again enter the postseason with one loss-to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in non-district play.
The Indians will host MOC-Floyd Valley as the Dutch sewed up the fourth playoff spot from District 1 with a 29-26 victory over Sheldon in Week 8. MOC-Floyd Valley finished the season against District leader Sioux Center on Friday.
Spirit Lake and MOC-Floyd Valley have one common opponent-Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. The Nighthawks defeated the Dutch 42-0 in Week 7 and the Indians 31-8 in Week 5.
MOC-Floyd Valley (4-4 overall) hasn’t amassed the yards the Indians have this season. Ethan Achterhoff leads the Dutch with 584 yards on 125 carries with four touchdowns. Quarterback Stefan Kinsinger has 362 yards and five touchdowns on 84 carries. Derek Rupp had 41 carries for 172 yards and four touchdowns. Kinsinger is 36-of-94 passing for 454 yards with five touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Meanwhile Spirit Lake quarterback Alec Henrickson has thrown for 1,581 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions on 91-of-181 attempts.
Austin Folsom is his top receiver as he has 24 catches for 553 yards and eight touchdowns. But the Indians spread the ball around with Trevor Jensen catching 26 passes for 362 yards and 2 touchdowns, Caleb Jennings has 12 catches for 238 yards, Mike Meschede had 10 catches for 232 yards and three touchdowns and Axel Johnston has 10 catches for 140 yards and one touchdown. Seven other players have at least one catch.
The Indians also can run the ball with Josh Hofstra leading the way with 103 carries for 623 yards and nine touchdowns. Henrickson has 60 carries for 275 yards and five scores. Kenten Murray has 213 yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries and Jensen has 28 carries for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Nine other players have at least one carry.
