Estherville Lincoln Central coach Dan Hewitt was pleased with his team’s efforts as the Midgets split a pair of Lakes Conference dual meets on Thursday.

ELC was dominant in a 51-21 victory of Cherokee and gave conference leader Spencer some good battles in a 51-24 loss.

“I thought we wrestled well coming off the holiday break,” said Hewitt. “We wrestled some tough matches.”

While the duals featured the usual pins, ELC senior Jake Bortvit had one of the more memorable matches of the night. Down 6-2 to Cherokee’s Mason Meitzenheimer in the third period, Bortvit came up with a takedown and three back points to pull out a 7-6 victory in the closing seconds.

Also against Cherokee, Juan Castro (113) came up with a pin over Matthew Stines for his first varsity win. Castro was filling in for Joel McCoy, who was out with an injury. Freshman Clay Budach (120) also won his first varsity match with a 2-0 win over Cherokee’s Collin Johnson.

In other matches against Cherokee, Thomas Bortvit (138), Chase Bonner (220) and Oscar Ramirez (132) had pins. Zackary Snyder (106), Blake Gjerde (152) and Billy Snyder (170), all received forfeits.

Starting at 152 pounds against Spencer, Gjerde eked out a 3-2 decision over Andrew White while Billy Snyder (170) and Jake Bortvit (182) both had pins and Bonner won a 6-0 decision over Austin Roberts as ELC built an 18-15 lead through the top weights.

But Spencer’s strength this year is in the lower weights as ELC came up with just one more victory, a pin by Ramirez (132), as the Tigers had six pins in weights 106 to 145.
