MASON CITY – Iowa Lakes held top-ranked North Iowa Area Community College down for a little while.

But the Trojans bench was just too much in a 78-45 victory on Wednesday.

Iowa Lakes held NIACC to just 28 percent shooting from the floor and out-rebounded the hosts 31-18 in the first half, but the Lakers still trailed 31-17 at the break.

But the Trojans defense proved more potent and their bench picked up the offense to pull away from the Lakers in the second half.

The Lakers trailed 19-14 with just over 5 minutes left in the first half. But too many turnovers proved to be Iowa Lakes’ downfall.

Alissa Johnson led the Lakers with 14 points while Leah Courtney finished with 12. Also, Sobrina West had seven points, Natasha Kindred had six and Nijala Johnson had two. The Lakers were 16-of-50 from the floor and 7-of-17 from the free throw line.

Lateeka Thompson led NIACC with 18 points and Chelsey Jacox had 17.

Iowa Lakes (4-12 overall, 1-2 in the ICCAC) are home against fourth-ranked Kirkwood today. Game time is 1 p.m.
