Skopec ends career on top

DES MOINES – Spirit Lake Park senior Zach Skopec completed his undefeated season with a state title last Saturday.

Skopec controlled his final match against sixth-ranked Creston-Orient Mackburg’s Chase Shiltz.

Skopec built a 5-0 lead with takedowns in the first and third periods and an escape in the second.

Shiltz had defeated top-ranked Chase Straw of Independence, 3-1, in his semifinal.

But all he could score against Skopec was a penalty point with 33 seconds left in the match and an escape with 19 seconds remaining.

But Skopec held on for the 5-2 victory. The senior ends his season final season with a 49-0 record and a career record of 178-17. The four-time state qualifier placed third his freshman and junior seasons.
