Lakers cruise in season finale
Iowa Lakes’ defense did its job against visiting Southwestern Community College on Saturday. The Lakers’ offense needed a little more time, but the host outscored the visitors 38-20 in the second half to cruise to a 66-41 victory.
The win earns Iowa Lakes the second seed in the upcoming Region XI Tournament as the Lakers improve to 21-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
Iowa Lakes will host Southwestern in the first round at 7 p.m. in Estherville on Tuesday.
Iowa Lakes looked to do well to start the game as Tate Harmon, Deondre Parks, Justin Sloter each hit 3-pointers and Diamontae McKinley hit two as Iowa Lakes took a 20-8 lead.
The Spartans fought back, cutting the lead to five, 25-21, with a minute left in the first half. But the Lakers’ Latrell Love scored the final basket to give the Lakers a 28-21 lead.
Southwestern stayed close to start the second half, but still trailed 40-34 when the Lakers’ defense stiffened.
The visitors went scoreless for nearly seven minutes while the Lakers put together an 11-0 run. Iowa Lakes closed out the game from the 3-point line as Parks hit two treys and Harmon, McKinley and Love each hit one trey over the final 5 minutes.
McKinley led the Lakers with 15 points after hitting 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Parks and Love each had 12 points while Colton Neff, Harmon and Emmanuel Golong each had six, Brandon Boggs had four, Sloter had three and Jake Janssen had two.
Elliott Harndeed led Southwestern with 12 points.
