North Union girls take fifth at Spirit Lake

SPIRIT LAKE – The North Union Girls Track Team finished fifth while the boys finished seventh at the Spirit Lake Co-Ed Invitational on Tuesday.

Spencer won the girls side with 182 points followed by Spirit Lake Park with 123, Okoboji with 80, Estherville Lincoln Central with 67 and North Union with 64. South O’Brien had 55 points and Clay Central-Everly had 17.

On the boys side, the Warriors finished seventh with 47 points.

North Union coach Loren Looft said he didn’t know which was tougher-the opponents or the elements as the teams competed with temperatures around 40 with a brisk wind.

“We still had some kids with some outstanding times,” Looft said.

The Warriors’ only top finish of the night came in the sprint medley as the quartet of Alexis Valvick, Kyarsten Mullen, MaKayla Hardman and Olivia Marlow edged ELC by 16 hundredths of a second in 2 minutes, 3.70 seconds.

Hardman had a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 13.73 seconds and also in the 200-meter dash in 28.95 seconds. Meanwhile Dena Looft finished second in the discus with a throw of 99 feet, 9 inches.

For the boys, Aric Runge had a pair of second place finishes as he ran the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.69 seconds and leaped 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump.
