Bulldogs edge past Midgets

LE MARS – The Estherville Lincoln Central Boys Golf Team suffered a little heartbreak in tying Le Mars on Friday, but losing by the tiebreaker-the fifth golfer on the team.

Both teams shot a 179, but the Bulldogs’ fifth score of 52 by Jonah Pottebaum was better than the Midgets’ fifth score of 53 by Alec Wycoff. Storm Lake was six strokes back with a 185.

“We were disappointed to lose to Le Mars on the fifth-score tie-breaker, but it certainly teaches us the value of each and every shot,” said ELC coach Dave Van Roekel.

The Bulldogs swept medalist honors on their home course with Tyler Carlson shooting a 39 and Brody Karr a 41.

Jack Brashear led ELC with a 41 while Corey Reeves shot a 45, Hunter King a 46 and Chris Seylar a 47. Besides Wycoff’s score, the other not-counting score was a 58 by Jake Bortvit.

ELC (8-3 overall, 2-2 in the Lakes Conference) will travel to the Storm Lake Invitational today. The Midgets host Jackson County Central on Monday.

In junior varsity play, Le Mars won with a 185, ELC shot 222 and Storm Lake 244.

Clay Tredway led ELC with a 46, Zach Edwards shot a 53, Chase Erickson a 60 and Blake Gjerde a 63. Non-counting scores were a 65 by Alex Molacek and a 67 by Derek Gebel.
