ELC places sixth at Lakes Tourney
SPIRIT LAKE – Estherville Lincoln Central’s Levi Jensen and Thomas Bortvit had a good day at the Lakes Conference Tournament last Saturday, but the duo could have used one more win.
Jensen and Bortvit played in the No. 1 doubles bracket and finished a respectable 3-2.
But had the won the tiebreaker game against Spencer, they would have taken first in the bracket and earned all-conference honors. The 5-4 (7-4) loss propelled them to fourth in the most-highly contested bracket of the tournament.
The two started the day with a 5-3 loss to Le Mars, but then beat Spirit Lake 5-3, Storm Lake 5-4(7-4) and Cherokee 5-2, before the final match against Spencer.
“I was happy with how we played,” said ELC coach Tony Klein. “Levi and Thomas finished fourth in No. 1 Doubles but if they would have won the tie break against Spencer they would have been conference champs.”
The Spirit Lake-Okoboji duo of Michael O’Brien and Ryley Smith went 4-1 on the day and won that bracket.
For other ELC results, John Reisner and Tim Soper went 2-3 on the day defeating Le Mars 5-4 (7-4) and Cherokee 5-2. However they lost to Spirit Lake 5-1, Storm Lake 5-4 (7-4) and Spencer 5-1.
In singles, ELC’s underclassmen took on the singles brackets. Drew Condon went 0-5 in the No. 1 singles bracket while Colten Christensen went 0-5 in the No. 2 singles bracket.
ELC finished sixth in the conference standings with five points. Spencer won with 18 points followed by Spirit Lake-Okoboji with 11, Le Mars with 10, Storm Lake with nine and Cherokee with seven.
