Iowa Lakes softball season ends at regionals

FORT DODGE – The Iowa Lakes Softball Team saw its season come to end last Friday, May 2, as the Lakers lost both games in the double-elimination Region XI Tournament.

Iowa Lakes opened the tourney with a 2-0 lead against top-seed Kirkwood after 1 1/2 innings. Kristi Larson hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Jess Abrahsmon in the first inning.

In the second inning, Kylie Pospisal led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Kristen King’s single to right field.

But the Lakers gave up three walks and three hits, including a two-run home run by Erin Weno, in the bottom of the second inning as Kirkwood scored six runs.

The Lakers’ offense couldn’t produce any more runs after that as Kirkwood won 10-2 in six innings.

Jordyn Derflinger took the loss as she gave up five earned runs on three hits with four walks and one strikeout. Kimberly frank closed out the game giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Larson finished 3-3 while Pospisal was 2-3 and King was 1-2.

In the consolation bracket, the Lakers faced Ellsworth. The Panthers scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 7-1 victory.

Iowa Lakes mustered just two hits-one each by Salina Gonzalez and King-and didn’t scratch out a run until the top of the seventh inning.

Derflinger again took the loss as she gave up six runs on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Frank pitched the final five innings and gave up one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts.

Iowa Lakes finishes the year with a 15-31 record.
