4×400, Schmidt earn state medals
DES MOINES – The Spirit Lake Park track teams ended the Class 3A State Track Meet with a medal in the boys’ 4×400-meter relay and another in the girls’ 1500-meter run.
In the second to last event of the state meet, Spirit Lake Park’s Caleb Jennings, Blake Enderson, Josh Waite and Pat Woizeschke finished eighth in the 4×400-meter relay in 3 minutes, 27.73 seconds. Their time was slightly slower than in the preliminaries when the group ran the event in 3:26.46. Center Point wont he event by nearly two seconds in 3:23.79.
In the girls’ Class 3A 1500, senior Dondi Schmidt finished fourth in 4:50.73, edging past Dubuque Wahlert’s Emily Moes by eight hundredths of a second. Gilbert’s Grace Gibbons won the event in a 3A state record time of 4:39.02. The Spirit Lake Park girls finished 15th overall with 16 points.
The Indians other event at state featured Tanner Goetsch in the boys 1600-meter run.
The senior finished 20th overall in 4:42.01. Two Boone runners swept the event with Chandler Austin winning in 4:20.65 with teammate Albert Meier finishing in 4:20.89.
The Spirit Lake Park boys finished 30th overall with seven team points.
