Midgets hold on to defeat Spirit Lake
After building a big lead, Estherville Lincoln Central had to hold on against a determined Spirit Lake team. After leading 10-5 after two innings, the Midgets held on for an 11-9 victory.
Neither ELC starter Carsten Bosch or Spirit Lake starter Tony Eckart began well.
Bosch walked his first batter and gave up another walk in the opening inning, but the Midgets limited the visitors to just a run.
In the bottom of the first, Riley Strenge led off with a single and Alec Wycoff drew a walk. A single by Billy Snyder scored the first run. After Eckart recorded his first strikeout, he gave up a walk to Bosch. A passed ball allowed Wycoff to score. Trey Jacobson was hit by a pitch and Tim Greving drew a walk to drive in another run and Corey Reeves was hit by a pitch to bring in another run. With two outs, Strenge returned to the plate and reached base on a catcher interference call as ELC took a 5-1 lead before a pop-up ended the inning.
The Indians bounced back with four runs in the top of the second with the Midgets scoring another five in the bottom of the inning.
Bosch still earned the win as he struck out one batter and walked four. Evan Olesen entered in relief and struck out one and walked two. The Indians began to rally in the seventh with three runs, but Austin Egeland came in to close out the game and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
For ELC, Strenge, Snyder and Greving each had two hits while Egeland, Reeves and Dan Christensen each had one.
For the Indians, Nile Skobergoe finished 3-4 with an RBI while Gavin Kramer and Keaton Leach each had two hits.
