Warriors prevail in the 10th inning

BANCROFT – North Union rallied to tie Class 2A No. 10 St. Edmond’s with two runs in the seventh inning and then squeaked out a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to pull out a 10-9 victory on Wednesday.

Trailing 8-6, No. 9 batter Braden Ortman led off the inning with a single and went to third when Cody Runksmeier reached on an error by the Gaels’ third baseman. A single by Colin Runksmeier scored one run and a sacrifice by Spencer Ricke scored the second to tie the game at 8-8.

St. Edmond’s retook the lead with a run in the top of the ninth. Again the Warriors answered as Ortman was hit by a pitch went to second on a sacrifice by Cody Runksmeier and scored on a single by Colin Runksmeier.

After setting the visitors down in order in the top of the 10th inning, Engelby drew a walk and pinch runner Trent Pedersen went to second on the sacrifice by Ortman. With two outs, Cody Runksmeier came up with the walk-off single to score Pedersen.

Corey Vaske ended up earning the win as he gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Colin Runksmeier pitched the first five innings and gave up four runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Warriors finished with 12 hits with Colin Runksmeier going 4-5 with two RBIs and Alex Krantz going 3-3 with three RBIs. Cody Runksmeier was 2-4 with an RBI while Ricke was 1-3 with an RBI and Vaske was 1-4 with an RBI. Riley Bauer was 1-1.
