Indians take big steps in Lakes race

SPIRIT?LAKE?- Spirit Lake control in the Lakes Conference race with two wins each against Spencer and LeMars this past week. With an 8-1 league record, the Indians (14-5) are atop the conference standings.

Spirit Lake shuts down Spencer

Bailee Newman pitched a one-hit shutout as Spirit Lake blanked Spencer 10-0 in five innings on Monday.

Newman struck out just two and walked one on the night.

The offense helped her out with 10 hits as Caitlyn Roberts and Whitlee Reitz each went 3-3. Roberts had a double and three RBIs while Reitz had two RBIs. Carly Ites was 2-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Newman was 1-2 while Paige Petersen was 1-3 with an RBI. Makenzie Thate also had two RBIs.

Indians down Tigers again

On Tuesday, the Indians downed Spencer 10-5. After trailing 4-1 after four innings, Spirit Lake took the lead for good with four innings in the fifth and outscored the hosts 9-1 through the final three innings. Newman earned the win on the mound. Only one of Spencer’s five runs was earned. Newman struck out six batters, walked one and gave up eight hits. The Indians finished with 12 hits. Newman was 1-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Maddie Richter was 2-3 with two RBIs while Whitlee Reitz and Kelsey Delperdang each were 2-4. Paige Petersen was 1-4 with two RBIs and Kayla Herrig was 1-2 with an RBI. Carly Ites also was 1-3 with an RBI.

SL sweeps Bulldogs

On Wednesday, Spirit Lake hosted LeMars where the Indians also had to make up a game with the Bulldogs. The doubleheader proved to be in the Indians’ favor as they swept the Bulldogs 5-4 and 7-6.

In the first game, the Indians scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning and held on in the bottom. Sami Ashland pitched three innings and struck out three batters, walked two and gave up six hits. Carly Ites pitched an inning and a third and walked two batters. Newman earned the win as she pitched 2 2/3 innings and struck out one batter, walked one and gave up two hits.

Spirit Lake finished with eight hits with Caitlyn Roberts going 3-3 with a double and two RBIs. Newman and Erin Dau each were 2-3 while Herrig was 1-3.

Newman pitched the entire second game, striking out six batters and walking four while giving up seven hits. Only two of the Bulldog’s six runs were earned. The Indians led 7-3 after a four-run third inning and then held on for the win. Roberts finished 2-4 while Maddie Richter and Herrig each went 2-3 with an RBI. Newman was 1-3 and Ites had an RBI.

Indians run away from Braves

SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake softball team ran away from Cherokee with five runs each in the final two innings on the way to a 17-6 victory on Friday, June 20.

The Indians pounded out 15 hits with Newman going 4-6 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Mackenzie Thate finished 3-5 with an RBI while Maddie Richter was 1-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Also Kelsey Delperdang was 2-3 and Caitlyn Roberts, Carly Items, Whitlee Reitz, Paige Petersen and Josie Fagen each had one hit. Petersen had two RBIs.

Newman earned the win on the mound. In seven innings, she gave up six runs (two earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
