ELC, North Union complete play at Spencer Tournament
SPENCER – Class 2A North Union finished up the Spencer Tournament with a 4-0 record while Estherville Lincoln Central finished 1-3 after going 1-1 this past Saturday.
North Union and ELC met for the third time this season with the Warriors again getting the better of the Midgets in the lowest scoring contest of the three games, 3-1.
Peyton Oleson pitched for the third time against ELC giving up one unearned run on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Carson Gjerde pitched for the Midgets with two of the Warrior runs earned. Gjerde struck out three and walked one.
ELC was scoreless until the seventh inning. Morgan White reached on an error with one out. With two outs, Megan Jensen hit an RBI double. Gjerde then stepped up and hit a line short toward first, that NU’s Erica Anderson “made an amazing catch,” according to ELC coach Megan Anderson.
For ELC at the plate, Caitlyn Clayton was 3-3 while Rachel Bates and Alyssa Friesner each went 1-3 and Jensen and Gjerde were 1-4.
ELC finally got back in the win column with a 5-3 win over MOC-Floyd Valley. Liz Brashear picked up the win as she struck out six batters, walked two and hit one while giving up four hits. All three of the Dutch runs were unearned.
ELC finished with eight hits with Jensen going 3-4 with an RBI, Brashear was 2-2 and Bates, Friesner and Rylee Miller each were 1-3.
“Defensively we’re playing better, but I’d like to see us hit more-especially with runners in scoring position,” said Anderson.
For North Union, Dena Looft was 2-3 while Breanna Anderson, Erica Anderson and Taylor Mathine each had a hit.
In their second game, North Union had to hold off against a charging LeMars team.
The Warriors led 6-0 after a four-run third inning The Bulldogs came back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Warriors added an insurance run in each of the next two innings and needed both of them as the Bulldogs scored three in the seventh before the game ended, 8-7.
Oleson was on the mound again for North Union as she gave up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
The warriors finished with 14 hits led by Taylor Mathine, who went 3-3 with an RBI. Dena Looft, Sarah Rolling, Breanna Anderson, Anna Ingalls and Erica Anderson each had two hits with Breanna Anderson with two RBIs and Looft with one. Kyarsten Mullen had two RBIs and Autumn Boland was 1-4 with an RBI.
