ROCKFORD – North Union needed just its second game this year to break into the win column with a 29-8 victory over Rockford after having gone winless in 2015.

The Warriors’ last won on Oct. 10, 2014, a 36-6 win over North Butler-a 12 game losing streak.

With a mostly new batch of players, along with first year head coach Matt Ernster, the Warriors won in a dominating fashion.

Sophomore Isaac Engeman carried the ball 32 times for 121 yards and four touchdowns while junior Derek Thompson finished with 166 yards on 36 carries. Engeman also scored two 2-point conversions with Trent Pedersen kicking an extra point.

Engeman also caught two passes for North Union quarterback Elliott Hagebock, who was 2-for-6 for 35 yards and one interception.

North Union finished with 331 yards of total offense and its defense did a good job of forcing Rockford to throw. Rockford managed just 12 rushing yards with junior Zach Bushbaum going 11-of-28 passing for 181 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Eythan Blair led the Warrior defense for the second week in a row with nine tackles while Jared Larson finished with seven. Pedersen had five tackles and the lone sack for North Union.

Hagebock snagged both Rockford interceptions with Blair recovering two Rockford fumbles and Pedersen pouncing on another fumble.

North Union (1-1 overall) opens Class A District 2 play at home in Armstrong against Ridge View (1-1 overall) on Friday. Ridge lost its opener 27-19 to Alta-Aurelia and defeated Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove 13-6 this past Friday.
