Midgets show improvement despite two-week layoff
STORM LAKE – Kevin Dong and Taylor Meyers both had top 25 finishes to lead the Estherville Lincoln Central Boys to a 10th-place finish at the Storm Lake Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday.
“I’m continuing to be impressed with Kevin,” said ELC coach Tina Burton. “He’s come a long way competitively. He is still fighting for top spots and even though he hadn’t competed in almost two weeks he did exactly what he needed to do to be towards the top. He and Taylor battled back and forth and continued to help push each other along quite well in the race.”
Dong ran the 5K race in 17 minutes, 34.94 seconds to place 14th while Myers placed 21st in 17:46.42. Others counting toward ELC’s team score, Ethan Traff placed 60th in 19:39.09 while Drew Condon placed 65th in 19:407 and Jacob Jensen placed 79th in 20:34.06.
Also for ELC, Marcus Smith placed 84th in 21:12.96 and Jose Saavedra placed 86th in 22:24.20.
In the girls’ race, Karley Hanson and Riely Christoffer both placed in the top 30 to lead ELC to a ninth-place finish.
“Karley probably ran the race a lot better on the last half than what she’s been able to do,” said coach Burton. “She had a great start and I feel like she did a better job putting herself into position to compete instead of position to catch up. Riley and her have been running well in practice together and use each other to know that they are each okay. Tonight I feel like Karley set out to run her race. Definitely need her to be doing that now instead of waiting later in the season. Additionally, it will help Riley move up in the upcoming races as well.”
Hanson placed 26th in 21:43.93 on the 5K course while Riley Christoffer placed 27th in 21:45.60. Others counting towards ELC’s team score, Laura Humble placed 50th in 23:00.67, Taylor Morris placed 54th in 23:22.29 and Melissa Gruwell placed 65th in 24:34.25. Also running for ELC, Kylie Quastad placed 69th in 24:56.50 and Madison Burton placed 72nd in 25:18.62.
“Laura Humble continues to move her way closer to the top as well,” said coach Burton. “I really like watching her run. I feel as though she is constantly picking people off and advancing closer to the top two runners on the team. I’d love to see the three of them battling for top spots together by the end of the season.”
In the girls junior varsity race, Bailey Spiegeler finished 27th in 24:52.55, Vanessa Vedder placed 33rd in 25:15.71, Erika Olson placed 45th in 25:40.45, Maggie Rezac placed 50th in 26:06.56.
In the boys’ junior varsity race, Chaz Berge paced ELC with a 54th place finish in 21:30.26 while Toby Jensen placed 124th in 25:22.93.
