ELC takes second at North Iowa Tourney
BUFFALO CENTER – The Estherville Lincoln Central Volleyball Team followed up its home tournament the previous weekend with a second-place finish at the North Iowa Tournament this past Saturday.
ELC opened the day with a 21-11, 12-21, 15-11 win over West Bend-Mallard and then defeated West Hancock 21-9, 21-11, Newman Catholic 21-12, 21-18 and North Iowa 21-16, 21-19 before losing to North Butler, 21-17, 12-21, 15-10.
“All the girls played great,” said ELC co-coach Jean Jensen. “Syd Swanson had an awesome day and did a great job as a middle hitter.”
“This tournament date always falls on the state band competition so it poses some challenges for our team each year because of missing players,” added co-coach Kieja Evans. “Missing five players was going to be a challenge, but with that comes some great opportunities for some of the girls to step up and fill those roles. This year it gave Addy Dostal and Mya Gjerde some great time on the court. I was very proud of the way they played. The whole group had a great day and worked together very well as a team.”
Evans also had praise for Swanson’s play.
“Sydney Swanson had the best game of her career starting off the day,” said Evans.”Then I think she beat it the next game, and the next. She played outstanding all day long. She has the quickest arm swing on our team and is finally starting to trust it on each approach and swing hard. I can’t say enough about her play in both the front and back row the entire day. I’m so proud of her.”
ELC (16-11 overall) is home against Spirit Lake on Tuesday.
