Class 2A State XC Qualifying Meet ELC girls finish 10th in final race
ORANGE CITY – The Estherville Lincoln Central girls gave their best effort and placed 10th at the Class 2A State Qualifying Cross County Meet in Orange City on Thursday.
Freshman Riley Christoffer led the Midgets as she placed second in 21 minutes, 20.4 seconds on the 5K course.
“Our girls’ team was equally as impressive (as the boys),” said ELC coach Tina Burton. “Riley ran her best race of the season. I liked what I saw from her from the very beginning of the race. She was passing runners aggressively and didn’t seem to back off through the whole race. She finished 22 overall.”
Junior Karley Hanson was the next to cross the finish line for ELC, as she placed 39th in 22:22.5. Junior Taylor Morris placed 41st in 22:26.0, freshman Laura Humble placed 52nd in 23:05.4 and junior Bailey Spiegeler placed 61st in 23:31.2 to complete ELC’s team score.
“The girls’ team didn’t fair as well in scoring as the boys, but many had personal bests,” said coach Burton. “The girls competition was just as impressive as the boys. Some really great runners were at this race today.”
Also running for ELC, senior Melissa Gruwell ran her final race in 23:38.6 to place 66th and freshman Kylie Quastad placed 68th in 24:16.6.
“We have a really young girls’ team, with only one senior,” said Burton. “Melissa Gruwell ran her final high school cross country race. She also gave everything she had. She has really loved being a part of this team and will also be missed next year.”
