Warriors advance with tough victory over E’Hawks

EMMETSBURG – Having swept Emmetsburg just 11 days earlier, North Union may have been looking for an easy night against the E’Hawks in the second round of Class 2A Tournament play on Monday.

While Emmetsburg did make the Warriors work for the victory, North Union (18-12) still came out on top 3-1 to advance to tonight’s Region 3 semifinal against Central Springs (21-7) at 7 p.m. in Manly. Tonight’s winner will play against the winner of top-ranked Western Christian (36-6) and Boyden-Hull (14-15) at 7 p.m., next Tuesday in Emmetsburg.

In North Union’s win over Emmetsburg, the Warriors had to work for everything they got despite an advantage in kills, 43 to 24, and blocks, 30-12.

North Union took game one 25-23 with Emmetsburg coming back to take game two 25-19. The Warriors took the final two games by identical scores of 26-24.

Senior Lyndsey Dietering led the North Union attack with 12 kills while junior Erin Goraczkowski and sophomore Maddie Rolling each had eight and junior Kate Anderson had six. Anderson had 26-set assists while senior Alexis Valvick finished with 16.

At the net, Dietering finished with a team-high 10 blocks while junior Hallie Reese had six and freshman Chloe Lofstrom had five.

In the back row, four Warriors had double digits in digs led by Rolling with 17, Valvick with 16, Anderson with 13 and senior libero Anna Ingalls with 12.

Serving, Emmetsburg finished 93-of-97 with nine aces while the Warriors were 88-of-95 with nine aces.

For the Warriors, Breanna Anderson was perfect on 23 serves with one ace. Kate Anderson had four ace serves and was 12-ofo-14. Aly Bierstedt was 15-of-16 with an ace, Rolling was 14-of-15 with an ace, Valvick was 11-of-12 with an ace and Ingalls was 13-of-15 with an ace.
