Coakley, Peta place third at SB-L Tournament
SERGEANT BLUFF – Estherville Lincoln Central’s wrestlers found competition very stiff at the first tournament of the season at the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Invitational on Saturday.
With 17 teams competing, ELC finished 15th with 64 points.
The meet featured two tough teams from Nebraska with Millar South winning the team title with 267.6 points followed by host Sergeant Bluff-Luton with 153 and Papillion-LaVesta, Neb., with 137.5.
ELC’s highest finishes came from Jason Peta at 1013 pounds and Lincoln Coakley at 170 pounds as the sophomores both placed third.
Peta started his day with a quarterfinal pin over Storm Lake’s Milton Duarte in 51 seconds, but he lost a 16-0 technical fall to Papillion-LaVista’s Nolan Niemiec. In the consolation round, Peta came back by pinning Millard South’s Alex Vacha in 3:36 and then faced Duarte in the third-place match again, winning in 23 seconds.
Coakley started the day with a pair of pins, defeating Sioux Center’s Jesse Jara in 5:59 and Woodbury Central’s Jack Dennison in 59 seconds. However in the semifinal, he lost by fall to Millard South’s Braden Trimble in 4:37. Coakley came back in the consolation round with a pin over Akron-West-Feidl’s Daniel Martinson in 4:52 and then defeated Bishop Heelan’s Shyler Langel by fall in the final in 2:14.
ELC senior Cole Anderson had the next highest finish as he placed sixth. He started the day by winning a pair of decisions, but was lost by fall in the semifinal and the consolation round to land in the fifth-place match. There, he lost a 3-1 decision to storm Lake’s Jorge Sandoval.
Brenden Duer (160) posted a 3-2 record on the day to placed eighth. All his matches were decided by fall.
Preston Mix (220) went 1-3 on the day and also placed eighth. All his matches were also decided by fall.
Carter Mix (126), Jalen Tripp (132), Chase Budach (138), Ethan Crees (152), Kylan Fitzgerald (182) and Juan Diaz (195) did not place.
ELC is back in action Thursdays as the Midgets travel to Spirit Lake for the first Lakes Conference duals of the season to take on the Indians and Western Christian.
