Coakley, Peta, Anderson advance to district meet
SERGEANT BLUFF – Estherville Lincoln Central advanced three of 11 wrestlers through the 2017 Class 2A Sectional Tournament in Sergeant Bluff on Saturday.
Sophomore Lincoln Coakley advances to this Saturday’s district meet in Spencer as a sectional champion while sophomore Jason Peta and senior Cole Anderson advance as sectional runners-up.
Coakley, ranked ninth in Class 2A. started the day in the 170-pound semifinal as he pinned Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Gabe Warren in 1 minutes, 53 seconds. In the final, he faced Cherokee’s Tyler Zeimen for the third time this season and pinned the Brave junior in 30 seconds. Coakley is now 32-4 on the season.
Peta started his day in the 113-pound semifinal. He pinned Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Dominique Hollowell in 1:41. In the final, he faced a familiar foe in Spencer’s Cade Hopkins. Hopkins had got the better of Peta at the Lakes Conference Tournament and again won, this time by pinning Peta in 3:44. Peta did not have to wrestle back. Peta’s record is 27-8.
At heavyweight, Anderson won his semifinal by pinning East Sac County’s Kipp Corbin in 3:22. In the final, he faced Spencer’s Nic Hoefling, ranked seventh in Class 2A. Anderson held on through the first period before getting pinned in 2:21 by Hoefling.
Anderson also did not have to a wrestle back. He is now 24-13 on the season.
All three wrestlers will be in Spencer for the 2A District meet as the top two wrestlers in each bracket will advance to state. Wrestling begins at noon Saturday.
At the sectional, four ELC wrestlers placed fourth. Senior Derek Gebel (160) won his quarterfinal match over Cherokee’s Mason Goebel in 3:18, but lost in the semifinal by an 11-0 major decision. In the third place match, Gebel lost 8-3 to Bishop Heelan’s Isaiah Gilmore. Gebel finishes his final season with an 18-14 record.
At 182, Kylan Fitzgerald won his quarterfinal match with an 18-2 technical fall over Spencer’s Drew Thompson, but then lost by fall in the semifinal. In the third-place match, he lost a 10-1 major decision to Cherokee’s Treighton Schubert. Fitzgerald finishes the season with an 11-18 record.
At 195, Juan Diaz won his quarterfinal match by pinning Cherokee’s Jaron Wood in 37 seconds. But he lost his semifinal match by fall and his third-place match 7-0 to Spencer’s Jacob Pingel. Diaz finishes the season with a 5-27 record.
At 220, Nick Egeland won his quarterfinal 8-2 over East Sac County’s Christian Perez, but lost his semifinal by fall and his third-place match by fall. He ends the season with an 8-21 record.
Also for ELC, Michael Houge (106), Chase Budach (126), Jalen Tripp (132) and Ethan Crees (132) all placed fifth.
