Titans win Manson sectional
MANSON – With three champions, four runners-up and four third-place finishes, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire came up big in winning the Class 1A Sectional Team title in Emmetsburg.
The win sends the Titans into Tuesday’s dual team tournament as they won with 214 points. Second-place Emmetsburg finished with 162.5 points and also advances to the regional dual tournament this Tuesday in Sibley.
Meanwhile, seven wrestlers will advance to this Saturday’s district tournament hosted by Okoboji in Milford. Wrestling starts at noon.
Winning sectional titles for GT/RA were Keeven Long (113), Lucas Hoffman (126) and Nate Harris (285).
Long won with two pins as he needed just 1 minute, 19 seconds to defeat Okoboji’s Cain Hansen in the semifinal and he then pinned Manson-Northwest Webster’s Caron Collins in 3:05 in the final.
Hoffman also won with two pins, defeating MNW’s AJ Cardenas in 2:31 and Okoboji’s Hunter Abrahamson in1:54.
Following the theme, Harris pinned MNW’s Alex Jacobsen in 3:12 and North Union’s Jake Anderson in 1:57.
Placing second for the Titans were Hunter Naig (106), Kolton Roth (132) Beau Schany (170) and Carter Murray (182).
Naig won his semifinal 5-2 over Sioux Central’s Nathan Harden, but lost by fall to MNW’s Daltin Roest. In a wrestleback, Naig won9-2 over Alta-Aurelia’s Schade Larson.
The surprise for the Titans may have come at 132 pounds. Roth, ranked second, won his semifinal by fall over Blake Abrahamson in 5:46. In the final, he met Emmetsburg’s Spencer Griiffin, ranked ninth. Both had just one loss entering the match. Griffin won a high-scoring 17-12 decision. That forced Roth into a wrestleback, but he won 8-2 over Alta-Aurelia’s Chris Langner to place second.
Schany pinned both his quarterfinal and semifinal foes. In the final, Okoboji’s Matthew Eckard won 6-4 in sudden victory.
Murray lost his seimfinalmatch12-9 to West Bend-Mallard’s Juan Falcon, but then pinned North Union’s Isaac Engeman in the third-place match in 1:29 to earn a wrestleback. In that match, he pinned MNW’s Reid Steinberg in 5:04.
Placing third for GT/RA were Monte Matthews (120), Spencer Roth (152), Blake Miller (160) and Cade Steelman (195).
Brett Triggs (138) placed fifth and Devon Naig (145) placed sixth.
GT/RA will wrestle West Sioux in the semifinal round of the regional dual tournament Tuesday evening. The winner will take on the Sibley-Ocheyedan vs. Emmetsburg winner.
