2017 State Wrestling Preview On a quest for a crown
DES MOINES – Four area wrestlers will test their mettle against the cream of the crop at the 2017 Iowa State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which begins today at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Jason Peta (113 pounds) and Lincoln Coakley (170) will represent Estherville Lincoln Central in Class 2A with the first session beginning at 6 p.m. Both are sophomores.
Lucas Hoffman (126) and Kolton Roth (132) will represent Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in Class 1A, which starts at 1:30 p.m.
ELC’s first round
Peta enters the tournament with a 28-9 record. As a district runner-up, he will face a district champion in Drake Doolitle of Webster City. Peta enters the tournament with a 28-9 record while Doolittle, also a sophomore, is 40-2 and ranked second in Class 2A. On the other side of the bracket are Keokuk senior Ashton Meyers (27-2), who was ranked 10th at 120 pounds in the final rankings of the season, and Denver-Tripoli freshman Gabe Lewis, ranked seventh at 113 pounds. Hoffman enters the tournament as an unranked sophomore, but has a 35-6 record. He will face Don Bosco junior Logan Lutgen (36-8) in his first match at state. On the other side of the bracket are Underwood junior Alex Thomsen (41-0) and Alburnett senior Ben Moyer (40-10).
Roth is the lone area wrestler with state experience after placing fifth a year ago. He enters the tournament ranked second as a junior. His first-round match puts him against Highland sophomore Cory Stewart (31-9). On the other side of the bracket are Don Bosco sophomore Max Wettengel (26-10) and Woodbury Central sophomore Garrett Arment (36-11).
