2017 NJCAA Wrestling Championships Four Lakers earn All-American honors
COUNCIL BLUFFS – The Iowa Lakes Wrestling Team worked themselves into an eighth-place finish at the 2017 NJCAA Wrestling Championships this past weekend. The Lakers were ranked sixth heading into the event.
Christian DuLaney paced the Lakers with a second-place finish and was the only local wrestler in the finals Saturday evening.
He entered the tournament ranked second and ended up losing to Timothy Young of Ellsworth by fall in 6 minutes, 46 seconds in Saturday’s 197-pound final. DuLaney had advanced to the finals with a win by fall Saturday morning.
George Farmah, ranked third, finished third at 133 pounds. He made it to the semifinals before losing to eventual champ Sean Shazer of Northeaster Oklahoma A&M. To get to the third-place match, he won in sudden death overtime. In the third-place match, Farmah edged Nathan Johnson of Clackamas 7-4.
Two other Lakers, Isaiah Cox and Kaz Maia reached the medal stand, placing sixth and eight, respectively.
Cox lost a 3-2 decision to Daishi Goto of Camden County in the 184-pound fifth-place match on Saturday.
Maia had to forfeit the seventh-place match to Dominique Evans of Northwest Kansas at 149 pounds.
Brian Maas (125) and Andrew Tate (165) both came up short of the medal stand, losing late Friday night.
Brady Brott (15) went 1-2 to start his day on Friday. Heavyweight Cayleon Barton went 0-2.
Overall, the tournament was a good showing from Iowa’s community college with all five teams placing in the top eight.
