Lakers knock down Eagles at home

The Iowa Lakes men wrapped up the regular season with a convincing 101-73 victory over Kirkwood on Saturday.

The win avenges a 97-66 loss to the Eagles on their home floor on Feb. 4.

Iowa Lakes jumped out to a 46-36 lead in the first half and won the second half 55-37.

Led by Kyle Beisch’s 22 points, the Lakers had five players in double digits while shooting 54 percent (38-of-70) from the field including 41 percent (9-of-22) from 3-point range.

Dennis Joiner came off the bench to score 20 points, grab eight rebounds and dish out three assists.

Streeter McIlravy was efficient on the offensive end with his 15 points as he shot 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Jaylon Tapplar had 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting while Tywon Bressler had 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

The Lakers shared the ball well with 22 assists led by Joe Binyoti with 10. He also had seven points. Bressler had four assists.

Also, Mitch Keller finished with four points, Jed Robinson had three and Rod Fuller had two.

The Lakers out-rebounded Kirkwood 46-36.

Iowa Lakes (21-8 overall, 8-4 in the ICCAC) opens Region XI Tournament play against Iowa Central at 7 p.m., Tuesday in Estherville.

Lakers shoot lights out against DMACC

After working through some offensive struggles and turnovers in the first half, the Iowa Lakes men blistered the nets in the second half to defeat Des Moines Area Community College 97-89 on Wednesday.

The Lakers trailed by as many as seven in the first half, but contributions from Joe Binyoti, Streeter McIlravy and Kyle Beisch brought the home team back within three, 39-36 at the break.

A 3-pointer from McIlravy to start the second half tied the game and began a seesaw battle over the next 10 minutes.

Tied at 60-60, two free throws by McIlravy ended up giving the Lakers the lead for good and also sparked a 19-6 Laker run. Capped by a jump shot from Dennis Joiner with 6:02 left in the game.

DMACC still trailed by 13, 88-75 after two free throws by Tywon Bressler with 1:48 left in the game when the Bears made a late run. DMACC fought back within four, 93-89, with 38 seconds left in the game, but didn’t score again while McIlravy made two free throws and Joiner capped the game with a basket with 19 seconds remaining.

The Lakers shot 71.4 percent from the field (20-of-28) and the 3-point line (5-of-7) in the second half as well as 80 percent (16-of-20) from the free throw line.

The Lakers shot 57 percent (33-of-58) for the game and 50 percent (8-of-16) from the 3-point line and 77 percent (23-of-30) from the free throw line.

DMACC shot 41 percent (26-of-63) for the game including 32 percent (9-of-28) from 3-point range and 78 percent (28-of-36) from the free throw line.

Beisch led the Lakers with 23 points while Bressler had 21, Binyoti had 16 and Beisch had 11. Also Joiner had eight points, Jaylon Tapplar and Alex Roger each had seven and Mitch Keller had four.

Keller also had eight rebounds and eight assists. The Lakers had 23 assists as a team with Bressler dishing out five and Binyoti with four.
