No. 17 Lakers split with No. 2 Eagles

Iowa Lakes Community College Softball went to battle with Kirkwood Community College on Sunday. The Lakers came up with the 7-5 game one win. Leilani San Pedro hit the game winning home run in the bottom of the sixth. The Kirkwood Eagles turned around and won game two 12-0 in five innings.

Iowa Lakes 7, Kirkwood 5

Kirkwood jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first on three hits. The Lakers were ready to fight as they scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

Lauren Hein hit a one out single to right field to get things started. San Pedro then drove a ball to right center to advance Hein to third and get to scoring position at second. Deanna Gerrard followed with a line drive down the right field line to score both runners and tie the game at 2-2.

The Eagles retook the lead in the top of the fourth with a run. Leftfielder Julia Sullwold threw a rope to catcher Gerrard to record the final out of the inning.

Sullwold got things going in the bottom of the fifth when she reached on an Eagle error. Hein then hit her ninth home run of the season to retake the lead 4-3.

Gerrard followed with a one-out walk and then advanced to third on a Courtney Calkins single. Blaney Markman then hit a pop fly behind third base that was misplayed by the Eagles to score Gerrard to put the Lakers up 5-3.

Kirkwood tied the game up in the top of the sixth with a two run home run. Iowa Lakes was not going to let this game slip through their fingers. Sullwold led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single and was brought home on a one out home run off the bat of San Pedro.

The Lakers brought the 7-5 lead into the top of the seventh with the Eagles 7-8-9 batters due up. Calkins got three straight ground balls to the left side of the infield to complete the 7-5 win.

Calkins picked up the win for the Lakers allowing five earned runs on 12 hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Hein and San Pedro were each 2-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Calkins also had two hits in the game.

Kirkwood 12,

Iowa Lakes 0 (5 innings)

Game two was a different story for the Lakers. The Eagles took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first on four hits. They added two runs in the second, two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, and one run in the fifth to win game two 12-0.

Ashton Kazmierski took the loss in game two allowing `1 earned runs. Julia Sullwold picked up the lone hit for the Lakers in game two.

The Lakers (20-7 overall, 7-3 in the conference) will be at home on Wednesday and Thursday this week with a pair of doubleheaders. They will take on Northeast Community College on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m. and the Northwestern JV on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Lakers are now 20-7 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
