Midgets take on tough SL-O team
OKOBOJI – There’s no better way to find out how you stack up then to start the season against a team that’s expected to be the best.
That’s what the Estherville Lincoln Central Girls Tennis Team found out in taking on Spirit Lake-Okoboji on Thursday.
While ELC ended up in a 9-0 loss, many scores were closer than indicated.
At the No. 1 singles, ELC sophomore Kendall Evans played her first match at the top spot and lost 10-1 to Casie Barba.
“Kendall had maybe 80 percent of her games go to 40-40, but she just couldn’t break through for the winning point,” said ELC coach Larry Kirchner.
At the No. 2 singles, Josie Condon had a seesaw battle against Alison Bueltel and came up a bit short 10-8.
At the No. 3 singles, Brianna Fix made the jump to varsity after playing junior varsity last year and lost 10-0 to Ashley Thorn.
“It’s a big step up and we know we have some things to work on,” said Kirchner.
At the No. 4 singles Liz Herrick fought a good battle and was up 6-5 before falling 10-6 to Abby Eckert.
“The other girl started playing smarter,” said Kirchner.
