ELC splits games at Spencer Tourney
SPENCER – The Estherville Lincoln Central Softball split its four games at the Spencer Tournament this past Friday and Saturday with both losses coming against rated foes.
On Friday, ELC opened tournament play with a 9-2 win over MOC-Floyd Valley, but then lost 5-0 to Class 1A No. 2 Akron-Westfield.
Against MOC-Floyd Valley, ELC scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. With a 6-2 advantage heading into the fifth inning, the Midgets added three insurance runs in the top of that inning. The game was called after five innings due to the 1 1/2hour time limit.
Olivia Truog earned the win on the mound for ELC. She gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. ELC finished with seven hits, led by Gabby Heckard, who went 2-4 with a double and three RBIs. Josie Condon finished 1-4 with two RBIs and Morgan White, Truog, Hallie Jensen and Lena McCoy each had a hit. Hallie Jensen, Lindsey Jensen and McCoy each had an RBI.
Against Akron-Westfield, Josie Condon broke up Westerner ace Ann Hedlund’s perfect game with a single in the top of the seventh. Otherwise Hedlund recorded 10 strikeouts with no walks.
Defensively, ELC stayed away from the big inning, but Akron-Westfield scored a run in five of the seven innings.
White took the loss on the mound as she gave up five runs (two earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
On Saturday, ELC met up with Spencer for the third time this season and came away with a 7-5 win. The Midgets then fell 11-1 in five innings to Class 3A No. 3, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.
Against Spencer, ELC got off to a slow start at the plate with one run in the second inning before scoring six runs in the sixth.
Truog started on the mound and gave up five runs (three earned) with two strikeouts and two walks. White pitched the final four innings and struck out five while giving up no runs hits or walks.
At the plate, Lindsey Jensen was 3-3 with a double and a run and McCoy was 1-3 with a double and two RBIs. Rylee Miller was 1-2 with a two-run home run that started ELC’s scoring in the sixth inning. Hallie Jensen was 1-2 with a run, White was 1-3 with an RBI and a run and Condon was 1-4 with an RBI.
Against Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, ELC had just four hits with three coming in the first inning. White led off with a single and Condon had a bunt single. Heckard pushed a bunt past the infielders to score White, but that was all ELC would get. Karmen Hazen had ELC’s only other hit in the fourth inning.
On the mound, Sydney Swanson took the loss. In 2 2/3 innings, she gave up 10 runs on six hits with three walks and a hit batter. Mya Gjerde finished the game, giving up one run on five hits and two walks.
ELC (13-16 overall) is home tonight against Emmetsburg. The Midgets are on the road against Western Christian on Tuesday and at LeMars on Wednesday.
