Warriors tested at Spencer Tournament

SPENCER – Playing four ranked opponents at the Spencer Tournament, Class 2A No. 2 North Union finished with a disappointing 1-3 record this past Friday and Saturday.

The Warriors started play Friday against Class 4A No. 6 Waterloo Columbus and lost 4-3. Columbus scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning after North Union had tied the game in the top of the sixth.

Anna Ingalls pitched all six innings in the loss, giving up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. At the plate, North Union finished with seven hits. Ingalls and Kyarsten Mullen each went 2-4 while Kate Anderson was 2-4 and Bre Anderson was 1-3. Mullen and Rory McClellan each had an RBI.

North Union then lost 7-1 to Class 3A No. 14 Spirit Lake. The Warriors held an early 1-0 lead when the wheels fell off in the bottom of the third inning. The Indians took advantage of a couple walks, a hit batter and a pair of Warrior errors along with a couple timely hits to score seven runs.

That would complete the scoring for the game.

Kate Anderson took the loss on the mound. In three innings, she gave up five runs (two earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Ingalls pitched two innings and gave up two unearned runs on one hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Maddie Rolling pitched an inning and had one strikeout while giving up a hit and a walk.

The Warrior bats were limited to just three hits with Hope Steinberger going 2-2 while Ingalls was 1-3 with a solo home run in the first inning.

On Saturday, North Union was held without a hit against Class 3A No. 3 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. Kate Anderson took the loss on the mound as she gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks in five innings of work. Rolling pitched one inning and gave up three earned runs on one hit with five walks and no strikeouts.

North Union earned its one win against Class 4A No. 14 Denison-Schleswig, shutting down the Monarchs 8-0. Ingalls threw a two-hit shut out, striking out 10 batters and walking just one.

The Warriors had seven hits with Bre Anderson leading the way, as she went 3-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Mullen finished 2-3 with a solo home run and a double. Steinberger was 1-2 with two RBIs and Ingalls was 1-4. Katelyn Thackery also had an RBI.

North Union (23-6 overall) is at Lake Mills today and home against Eagle Grove on Wednesday.

Warriors on the tops

BELMOND – The top of the top-ranked North Union lineup did the bulk of the damage in a 13-2, five-inning win over Belmond-Klemme on Wednesday.

The first three batters in the order, Anna Ingalls, Kyarsten Mullen and Maddie Rolling, combined for nine hits, eight runs and six RBIs in leading the Warriors.

Ingalls was 3-3 with four runs, Mullen was 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs and Rolling was 3-3 with three RBIs and two runs.

The Warriors had four more hits with Rory McClellan going 2-4 while Kate Anderson was 1-3 with a double and two RBIs while Katelyn Thackery was 1-2.

North Union was very aggressive on the base paths and had 12 stolen bases, as Rolling had four thefts while Ingalls and Thackery each had two.

Anderson took the mound for North Union to earn the pitching win. She gave up two earned runs in five innings of work on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
