ARMSTRONG – North Union sports teams had their share of success in 2017.
Two teams-the boys’ golf team and the softball team-represented the school district in state competition.
Riley Bauer continued his dominance on the cross country courses, repeating as state champion. He also nabbed a 1600-meter run title at the 1A State Track Meet and came away with three medals at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Here’s a look at highlights from North Union’s year.
Bauer repeats as chamion
North Union’s Riley Bauer finished second in a race just once during the 2017 cross country season. The senior dominated most fields and won his second consecutive Class 1A State Meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. In both 2017 and 2018, Bauer won state with ease, winning by 6 seconds in 2017 and 23 seconds in 2018.
Bauer powers NU to three medals
A junior in the spring, Bauer also defended his Class 1A 1600-meter run title in 2017. His win this past year at state was done in dramatic fashion, as he broke a 31-year state record for the 1A 1600-meter run.
Bauer raced with Central Lyon’s Gable Sieperda and pulled away to win by 2 seconds with his record-setting time of 4 minutes, 18.43 seconds.
Bauer finished second to Sieperda earlier at the state meet in the 3200-meter run, with his time of 9 minutes, 29.85 seconds. Sieperda also happened to set the 1A record in that event in 9:15.30.
Bauer earned a third medal at the state meet, anchoring the second-place distance medley team, which included juniors Blake Crawmer and Derek Thompson along with senior Trent Pedersen.
Bauer will look to add to his medal collection at the 2018 state track meet.
Also representing North Union at the state track meet were Thompson in the 100-meter dash and Elliott Hagebock in the high jump.
The North Union girls also had a handful of events at the state meet. Senior Kyarsten Mullen finished 10th in the 100-meter dash and 16th in the 200-meter dash. She also was part of the 4×100-meter relay team that finished sixth. Her teammates in that event were Rory McClellan, Alexis Valvick and Olivia Marlow.
North Union Boys Golf at State
Led by seniors Parker Oleson and Nathan Eaton, the North Union Boys Golf Team earned its first trip into state competition.
Oleson, who had qualified as an individual the previous two seasons, finished second overall for the second consecutive season. He carded a 143 at the 1A State Meet in Marshalltown, five strokes behind champion Kaleb Hagge’s 137.
Eaton tied for 27th overall with a 167. Also making the trip to the state golf tournament were Brady Anderson, Hayden Nicoson, Preston Brandenburg and Marvin Rezac.
Warrior Softball Team at State again
Behind the arm of senior pitcher Anna Ingalls, the North Union Softball Team advanced to the Class 2A State Softball Tournament for the third straight year.
Although the Warriors were unable to come up with a win at the 2017 tournament, North Union finished eighth overall.
North Union had an exciting run to the state tournament with a 12-0 win over Sioux Central, a 3-2 victory over Western Christian and a 3-1 win over West Lyon. While just two of the five seniors played a large role in the team’s success, the Warriors will miss Ingalls’ arm in 2018.
The North Union Girls Basketball finished 18-4 overall and finished tied for second in a competitive Top of Iowa West Conference in the 2016-17 season. Unfortunately, the Warriors’ postseason road went through eventual Class 2A State Champion Western Christian. North Union is off to another great start for the 2017-18 season, posting a 9-0 record prior to the Christmas break.
It remains to be seen what the current squad will accomplish.
The North Union Wrestling Program had its first district qualifier in Brady Anderson. Now in just its fourth year of existence, the Warriors are looking for even more success in the 2017-18 season.
