Lakers hold on for victory
The Iowa Lakes women built a 34-point lead midway through the third quarter when the visiting Northwestern Junior Varsity made a furious rally in the final 12 minutes of the game. However, the Lakers held on for an 88-80 win.
“We played three good quarters today. We are continuing to learn how to put together four good quarters,” said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin.
Iowa Lakes led 24-19 after one quarter and 55-32 at the break.
Breanna Wendland, who finished with a game-high 32 points, scored the first seven points of the third quarter, as part of an 18-7 run to start the period. However, Northwestern kept battling and shots started the fall, as the visitors cut the deficit back to 23 points, 77-54, to start the final frame.
Wendland shot 13-of-19 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
Sharece Smith poured in 18 points and Shanice Vaughn came off the bench to add 12 points. Smith had a team-high eight assists while Wendland had five. Vaughn had four steals and Wendland and Smith each had three. Smith also had 13 rebounds.
Iowa Lakes (7-2 overall), travels to Mason City to play Central Community College on Saturday and Grandview Junior Varsity on Sunday. The Lakers return home on Wednesday, Dec. 4 for their first conference game of the year against Iowa Central at 5:30 p.m.
