ELC improvement still shows at tough tourney
SPENCER – Estherville Lincoln Central made its first trip to the Spencer Volleyball Tournament on Saturday and finished 1-4 on the day.
The Midgets had been scheduled to attend the Spirit Lake Tournament, but sought out the different venue when the Indians canceled the event and suspended their season due to a Covid case on their team.
At Spencer, ELC started the day against the hosts, losing 21-16, 21-14, then lost 23-21, 21-14 to West Lyon and 21-19, 21-10 to carroll. ELC finally got in the win column, defeating Algona for the second time this season, 21-14, 21-17.
The Midgets then played Okoboji and lost in three sets, 22-24, 14-21, 15-10. ELC had defeated the Pioneers earlier this year.
“There were a lot of really good teams at this tournament,” said ELC coach Jean Jensen. “Other than our last game against Okoboji, I thought overall the girls played better than they did last weekend. I realize our wins and losses don’t show that, but we did make progress this weekend. We are just happy we even got to play and thankful Spencer let us into their tournament.”
For the tournament, Maddie Norton led ELC with 20 kills, Kya Thiel had 14, Alivia Danner had 12, Brenna Evans had nine and Madison Mack had seven.
Serving, Danner was 35-of-36 with three aces, Thiel was 34-of-35 with two aces, Adelee Reinhardt was 26-of-27 with three aces, Norton was 32-of-35 with three aces, Kendyl Ruschy was 31-of-37 with four aces, and Nicole Hockett was 18-of-18 with an ace.
Defensively, Reinhardt had 38 digs, Norton had 35, Danner had 26, Ruschy had 20, Hockett had 16 and Thiel had 10. Thiel also had five blocks.
ELC (7-11 overall) travels to Cherokee on Tuesday before hosting Western Christian for the Midgets’ first home match on Thursday.
